The MBC team have completed bushfire mitigation works at Lake Leschenaultia, located in Chidlow. This beautiful location attracts thousands of visitors every Summer, and required access upgrades and a fuel load reduction. This protects not only the surrounding properties, but emergency responders in the event of a bushfire.
As this is a Dieback sensitive site, MBC have taken care to maintain hygiene of equipment and perform regular safety checks on the work site. All equipment was thoroughly cleaned before and after each stage of works.
MBC have completed upgrades to internal and external firebreaks, vegetation mulching debris and ground regrowth and overhead pruning. The completion of this project will reduce the intensity of any potential bushfires and protect the native bush.
The project was undertaken in four stages.
Stage 1:
Vegetation mulching 28km of track to width of 5 metres. The track shoulders are now cleared and fuel loads removed.
Stage 2:
Upgrading tracks to 4 metres wide. Some areas of track required new breaks to be pushed in and pinch points removed. Overhead branches were removed where required to allow for 5 metre height clearance.
The tracks now have improved access for emergency vehicles and lake goers.
Stage 3:
Site clean up, removal of spoils and mulched debris from the tracks, ensuring everything is left nice and tidy and no potential hazards are left.
Stage 4:
Erosion control of external firebreaks. This required the removal of old fence on Rosedale Road and mulching 2 metres on verge side, before erecting a new fence. MBC installed cross falls to manage water runoff under the newly erected fence.
